Crowns and Bridges

Badly damaged or missing teeth can be treated by getting a Dental Crown or Tooth Bridge.

Crowns and the majority of bridges are fixed dental prosthetic devices that are cemented onto already existing teeth or oral implants.

How Dental Crowns Work

Crowns are used to either completely cover or cap a damaged tooth. This procedure not only strengthens a tooth that has been damaged, but can also improve its alignment, shape or appearance. Crowns may also be used to cover over a dental implant.

How Tooth Bridges Work

Bridges are used to span a gap between missing teeth. A bridge is cemented to your natural teeth or implant that is on either side of the missing tooth. These teeth serve as an anchor for the bridge.

What are they made from?

Crowns and bridges are made from a variety of materials including ceramic, porcelain, gold metal alloys and acrylic. Porcelain is often a preferred choice because it can be matched to the colour of your existing teeth.

How are they put into place?

Before a crown or bridge can be installed, the tooth or teeth have to be reduced in size so that the replacement crown or bridge will fit properly over top. Then the dentist makes an impression to create a proper mold. While the permanent crown or bridge is being made in a lab, a temporary replacement is put in place. Finally, when the permanent bridge or crown is ready, the temporary is replaced with the permanent one.
